We all know the threat of ransomware looms, but attackers are taking things to the next level. According to Ars Techinca, we’ve seen a shift in tactics. While hackers historically offered “good customer service” by not releasing stolen information for ransom paid, ransomware operators are getting more aggressive, dumping data on public websites for ransoms not paid on time.
When terms such as “ransomware gangs” and “extortion” start being used in conversation, it indicates attackers have really upped the ante. Apparently, the most seemingly prepared organization is no longer immune, even if the attack is contained. “Having a good backup is no longer enough to prevent real damage from ransomware,” wrote Shawn Gallagher in Ars Technica.
It may sound like a no-brainer, but even Gartner says preventing attacks is more ideal than recovering from them. In its report 5 Key Challenges You Must Solve With Your Next Backup Platform, Gartner notes one of the key challenges for today’s infrastructure and operations leaders is to keep backups secure as a last line of defense against ransomware.
So, where do we go from here?
Many data protection vendors are beginning to dabble in cybersecurity with claims their technology offers anti-ransomware features. The reality? There’s an entire market of vendors with expertise in one thing – security. These companies live and breathe threat detection and prevention, offering AI, EDR, MDR, and exploit prevention, among other technologies that are meant to deal with ransomware and other cyber threats.
Arcserve Appliances Secured by Sophos bring the best of both worlds together, leveraging decades of data protection and cybersecurity expertise to provide the first multi-layered solution that does both.
